This recent Supreme Court case regarding affirmative action will have a significant impact on the future of equal opportunity and diversity in our Commonwealth and nation. The members of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus (VLBC) express deep outrage over the Supreme Court’s ruling on this matter today.

Historically, one of the most prominent places racism has appeared is in our educational systems. Today’s decision represents a setback in our ongoing fight for racial equity and social justice by undermining affirmative action policies especially in academic settings. With this decision, we risk perpetuating and exacerbating existing disparities in education, employment, and more. Actions like this hamper our progress where everyone, regardless of their background, can thrive and contribute to our collective success.

Affirmative action has long been a critical tool to address historical and systemic disadvantages faced by marginalized communities. It recognizes the need to create a level playing field, rectify past injustices, and ensure that everyone has a fair chance to succeed regardless of their race or ethnicity.

Though we are not surprised, we are incensed that this decision continues the trajectory of white supremacy – from the transatlantic slave trade, to vicious backlash from our Emancipation and Reconstruction, to Jim Crow and Massive Resistance. Today’s decision shows that our fight is ongoing.

The members of the VLBC urge our fellow lawmakers, educational institutions, and the public to join us in reaffirming our commitment to affirmative action. Let us work together to preserve and expand opportunities for individuals who have historically faced discrimination and ensure that the doors of success remain open for all.

With those celebrating this decision, we see a continued effort and agenda to erase the historic events that led to today’s ongoing impact of systemic racism. But we know the truth of our shared lived experiences and will not stop teaching the truth, and we will not stop fighting for justice.

We will continue to champion legislative initiatives that promote equality, dismantle systemic barriers, and advance the principles of justice that our nation stands for – despite whatever political obstacles may stand in our way.
